Reduce Rust using Slide Rust Preventatives

What is rust and how is it created?

We see rust on molds, dies, and nearly all machinery – but what is it, why does it form, and how can you remove or even prevent it from developing in the first place?

Rust is the result of a natural process between the iron in metal and the oxygen in water called oxidation. Because iron and oxygen have opposite charges, they are attracted to one another. When they combine, a chemical reaction takes place causing ferric oxide to form – rust. Usually red or black in color, rust causes metals to deteriorate and often will emerge faster in conditions where it is exposed to acidic vapors, chemicals and changes in temperature.

Unfortunately for many plastic molders and mold makers, these conditions are regularly present in their operating and manufacturing environments. Hot and cold water lines running through mold blocks often cause molds to sweat, producing condensation that can lead to rust forming on both the mold and machinery. Rust isn’t just unattractive to look at, it is a catalyst by which metals can decay, become flaky, weak and even crumbly – making it a serious problem and obstacle to profitable plastic processing.

AceTronic has partnered with Slide, and offers a complete line of rust preventive products, specifically formulated to help molders and mold makers protect their sizeable investments. All Slide anti-rust products work to displace existing moisture from the mold surface almost immediately after being applied. This critical step offers full protection against condensation and moisture becoming trapped on the mold cavity, leading to almost instant rusting concerns. Following the displacement of liquid, Slide’s rust protective products lay down a self-healing coating that prevents future moisture from reaching the metal mold surface.
