Signs of Rust in Injection Molds

Discoloration and Ghosting

Early signals of oxidation often present as slight color variations or a dull sheen on part surfaces. Inspect finished products under proper lighting and look for any indicators of inconsistencies in appearance or finish.

Pitting and Surface Defects

Corrosion typically starts as irregularities on the mold itself. Over time, these expand and transfer directly to parts. Examine for small dimples, rough textures or uneven spots, which are often caused by internal pitting.

Increased Friction and Ejection Issues

Rust creates a rough surface which intensifies friction. As a result, components become harder to eject, cycles times increase and parts may get damaged during ejection. Pay attention to heightened resistance, sticking and other unusual defects.

Cooling Inefficiencies and Waterline Buildup

When mold temperatures drop below the dew point during cooling, moisture can form inside the mold. This trapped wetness creates ideal conditions for rust and mineral buildup, restricting water flow over time.

Unusual Odors During Production

Rust produces a sulfuric like or metallic smell when the mold is heated or opened – often indicating that oxidation is occurring.

Flash and Parting Line Defects

Corrosion and uneven areas near the parting line prevent a proper seal. Molten plastic can then escape the cavity, resulting in flashing or gaps in the completed piece. Inspect finished products for excess residue around joints, openings along edges and inconsistent sealing.

As temperatures rise—and in many areas this year, really rise—your equipment feels the heat, too. Summertime can wreak havoc on your production if you’re not paying attention to one critical area: your plastics dryer.

Process Side: Don’t Let Moisture Sneak In

Dry air must move freely and cleanly to the drying hopper—but summer humidity is relentless. Here’s what to check:
Hoses: Replace any cracked or crushed ones.


Hopper Covers & Gaskets: These should be intact and sealed tight to block ambient moisture.


Filters: Clogged filters choke airflow, slowing resin drying and preventing proper temperatures. Clean filters = better product.

Regeneration Side: Make Clean Air Count

The regeneration cycle is key to keeping desiccant beds effective. Summer heat can limit performance unless:
– Filters are kept clean—dust, fines, or plasticizer buildup restrict airflow even if they “look” clean.
– Plasticizer traps and aftercoolers are installed and functioning, especially if you’re seeing oil or residue in housings.
– Filter Schedules are followed:Virgin resins: every 6 months
Regrind/glass-filled: check by condition
– Drying temps are accurate—just a few degrees too high can release excessive plasticizer.
Don’t forget to inspect the filter housing itself: missing gaskets or worn lids can cause air leaks that invite humidity right back in.

Airflow Blockers: Heat Exchanger Health

If your dryer uses a return air heat exchanger or aftercooler, summer’s the time to inspect it:

– Disconnect hoses
– Check inside tubes for dust, long glass fibers, or other blockages
If build-up is routine, consider a cyclone separator to protect long-term airflow

Resin Storage: The Forgotten Factor

Even the best dryer can’t fight an open resin bag. Here’s how to help:

Resins like glass-filled nylons can need up to 16 hours of drying if exposed!

Keep bags sealed until ready

Store unused resin in airtight containers

Use Gaylord covers to prevent moisture and dirt intrusion

]]> To preserve the life of your injection molding tools, proper lubrication of ejector pins is key. Nobody should have to clean and scrape for hours, losing valuable production time and risking damage to machinery. The wrong lubricant or poor maintenance procedures may lead to galling, seizing and pitting, not to mention the likelihood of defective parts. Correctly choosing and applying the right emollient can solve all of these possible negative outcomes. 

Super Grease from Slide Products should have its own superhero series. This “marvel-ous” product is saving the plastic processing industry from costly loss of time and revenue, swooping in with just the right attributes before a less effective grease can cause those types of problems. Choosing the right mold Release

One of the simplest ways to increase production and extend the life of your molds is by using the proper mold release formula. Mold releases work as a lubricant coating to prevent sticking parts and excess resin build-up within molds. By creating a barrier between the mold and the resin, mold releases prevent the two from clinging together and potentially damaging the machine. However, with so many options, it can be hard to determine the best mold release option for your application.

There is no one size fits all solution when it comes to mold releases, and that is why we have over 25 unique formulas here at Slide. Each one is designed for specific materials and applications to increase production capability and results. Below we highlighted some common mold release uses and our recommended product(s) to tackle those sticky parts.

For Food-Related Parts

    ]]>     Contamination occurs when a foreign substance gets trapped in the molten plastic during the injection molding process. These substances can be anything from extra moisture to dirt, flecks of paint from the interior of your machinery to bugs.

    Machinery Contamination

    If your injection molding machinery is in disrepair or not being correctly operated, oil leaks, dirt, and other matter can get into the plastics. It is essential to repair any oil leaks as quickly as possible and clean up any grease drips as soon as they happen. Cleaning the hopper thoroughly between material changeovers will help reduce contamination.

    Mold Contamination

    Molds with moving parts need frequent lubrication to keep them in good working order. However, if too much lubrication is used, excess can find its way into the mold. Optimizing lubricants is the best way to prevent contamination that can impact the integrity and quality of your plastics.

    Material Contamination

    Raw materials used in the injection molding process can become contaminated and negatively impact the finished product. Regrind, or material from a previous process causes the equipment to become dirty. To prevent this, cleaning the equipment and carefully checking for regrind is key.

    Extra moisture can cause contamination from water, therefore, thoroughly dry all raw material before putting it through the molding process.

    Operator Contamination

    Ensure that food and drink is not kept near the equipment, implement proper cleaning procedures, and ensure proper care to ensure operator contamination does not occur. Review cleaning and housekeeping procedures often with your employees, and spot check the floor to be sure the rules are being followed.

    Splay

    Splay is off-colored streaking in a finished product that’s caused by moisture being trapped in the material during the injection process, or a degradation of the material.

    What Causes Splay?

    Splay can be caused by excess moisture getting into the molten material as it’s being injected into the mold. As moisture turns into steam in the injection process, it discolors the finished product. If the defect does not occur in the same section each time, it is likely due to moisture splay.

    Heat can also create splay. If you identify signs of stickiness or burning on the finished product, or if there’s an odor of overheated material, it’s likely Heat splay.

    Shear during the injection process also can cause splay, and this type of splay often is repeatable on other molded parts as the issue occurs at the same point in the injection process each time.

    Moisture-related Splay

    Ensuring that all material is thoroughly dry before beginning the injection mold process is crucial. Mold leaks also can cause moisture-related splay, so check the mold carefully for any signs of damage or leakage.

    Heat-related Splay

    Check that the melting temperature is within the window defined by the materials manufacturer to prevent against overheating. Too much back pressure also can cause the material to overheat and cause splay, so carefully dialing in the amount of back pressure used in the process is important.

    Shear-related Splay

    If your piece has smaller gate sizes, you may want to decrease the beginning-of-fill pressure to avoid filling the mold too forcefully. Large changes in temperature from when the material leaves the nozzle and when it enters the mold also can create shear-related splay. Check and properly calibrate both temperatures.
